Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă holds a press conference at the Government to announce his resignation from office, the first step towards government rotation. PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu is expected to be appointed new prime minister.
What’s next. After the public announcement, Nicolae Ciucă will go to the Cotroceni Presidential Palace to formalise his resignation.
Tomorrow there will be consultations at the Cotroceni to form a new cabinet, coalition sources told G4Media.ro.
After negotiations, President Klaus Iohannis will nominate a candidate for prime minister. Most likely, he will nominate PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu to form the government.
What the Romanian Constitution states, Article 103:
„(1) The President of Romania shall nominate a candidate for the office of Prime Minister, after consulting the party having the absolute majority in Parliament or, if there is no such majority, the parties represented in Parliament.
(2) The candidate for the office of Prime Minister shall, within 10 days of nomination, request a vote of confidence by Parliament on the program and the entire list of the Government.
(3) The program and the list of the Government shall be debated by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate in a joint meeting. The Parliament grants confidence to the Government by a majority vote of the Deputies and Senators.
Then, according to the Constitution, the Prime Minister, the ministers and the other members of the Government are sworn in individually before the President of Romania. The Government as a whole and each individual member exercises their mandate from the date of swearing in.
