Explosion in the Black Sea on the shore of Romaian seaside resort Costinesti / Possibly a sea mine / No casualties reported / UPDATE Another mine is floating offshore / Naval Forces: Most likely, authorities will restrict tourists’ access to the area.
On Monday morning, an explosion took place at sea near the pier in front of Costinești’s Forum Hotel, as stated by ISU Dobrogea. The origin could potentially be a sea mine, according to the source. Numerous rescue squads have been deployed to the location.
An update at 10:28 AM from ISU Constanța reveals that an explosion has happened on the pier and the vicinity has been cordoned off. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
At 10:20 AM, Corneliu Pavel, a spokesperson for the Romanian naval forces, informed Digi24 that a team of divers is en route to Costinești to assess the situation. Pavel mentioned, „Strong winds are blowing from the open sea towards the shore, and the sea conditions are challenging. It’s a demanding task. We will gather more details once they reach the location. Since the commencement of the conflict, our divers have successfully rendered harmless five sea mines.” Pavel also added that authorities will likely impose a restriction on tourists within approximately 150 meters of the explosion site.
In an update at 10:17 AM, Vergil Chițac, the mayor of Constanta, assured Digi24 that the incident would not impact tomorrow’s Navy Day celebrations.
Furthermore, at 10:16 AM, sources within the police revealed to G4Media.ro that another mine is reportedly adrift in the sea.
