Joint statement by governing coalition leaders condemning Russia’s armed aggression in Ukraine: Our country will not be involved in any possible military conflict. Never in its history has Romania had more solid security guarantees

PSD, PNL, and UDMR leaders issued one of the few joint statements condemning Russia’s armed aggression on the territory of Ukraine. The coalition leaders state in the statement that „with today’s cynical invasion, the Russian Federation is the architect of the most severe security crisis since the Second World War, endangering the lives of millions of people, be it, children, the elders, women or men”. Coalition leaders say Romanians are safe and our country will not be involved in any possible military conflict.

„Never in its history has Romania had stronger security guarantees than now, as a NATO member. In these times of regional insecurity, it is all the more clear how important Romania’s membership in NATO and the European Union and its very strong strategic partnership with the United States of America are,” the joint statement added.

Joint statement by the chairmen of the ruling coalition parties condemning the armed aggression of Ukraine by the Russian Federation

The Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party, the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania and the Parliamentary Group of National Minorities strongly condemn the armed invasion and aggression of the territory of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.

The actions of the Russian Federation criminally violate the principles of international law, starting with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. With today’s cynical invasion, the Russian Federation is the architect of the worst security crisis since the Second World War, endangering the lives of millions of people, whether children, the elderly, women or men.

Those who gave the order to launch the invasion will henceforth be seen throughout the democratic world as aggressors with innocent victims on their conscience. Not only Romanians, but hundreds of millions of people on all continents who are watching the dramatic images from Ukraine know and feel that no matter how powerful the aggressor is today, no military force can defeat the truth. And the truth is that the right of the Ukrainian people to sovereignty and independence cannot be denied by the will of some temporary ruler of another state.

We assure all Romanians that they are safe and our country will not be involved in any possible military conflict. Never in its history has Romania had stronger security guarantees than now, as a NATO member. In this period of regional insecurity, it is all the more clear how important Romania’s membership in NATO and the European Union and its very strong strategic partnership with the United States of America are.

The illegal use of armed force to achieve objectives determined by a falsified history is unacceptable to the world of the 21st century and the Russian Federation will bear the consequences of these actions which flagrantly violate the foundations of international relations. The unacceptable actions of the Russian Federation will be met with an appropriate response from Romania’s NATO and EU partners, with whom Romania is in constant coordination. The Russian Federation must understand that it must urgently cease its aggression against Ukraine and avoid at all costs the loss of human lives.

Moreover, the Russian Federation’s aggression will have devastating consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for the Russian people, who will inevitably suffer as a result of the far-reaching economic and other sanctions which will deeply affect their country, to the point of international isolation.

We believe that it is our duty as responsible Romanian democratic political forces to show our solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of families fleeing the invasion orchestrated by Vladimir Putin. The Romanian Government will help all Ukrainian citizens seeking refuge in our country and we will provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Marcel Ciolacu, President of the Social Democratic Party

Florin Cîțu, President of the National Liberal Party

Kelemen Hunor, President of the RMDSZ
