LATEST: Intelligence Service declassified its internal file on the 1989 revolution. Documents can be consulted online
The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) has declassified the file on the involvement of employees of the Department of State Security (DSS) in the events of 1989, at the proposal of the SRI director, according to a press release.
The file can be accessed and downloaded here
Please note that the documents are edited so that the names of officers and workers of the former communist Securitate are hidden.
The declassified file was part of the investigations of the „December 1989” Commission, set up in 1991 at the level of the Romanian Senate to investigate the events in Bucharest and in the country between 1 and 31 December 1989.
The declassification of the file is part of the project announced earlier by the SRI leadership to make public all documents relating to the events of 1989.
„Today, the SRI is taking another step to support or boost this national effort. We have declassified and published on the SRI website all the documents that our institution still held on the 1989 Revolution. I hope that by doing so, any additional bits of information brought to light will contribute to the writing of history. A sign that the Romanian state needs to shake itself up and truly condemn communism in the full legal sense. And not only communism, because the former Securitate also played an important role in the bloody repression of anti-communist demonstrators in December 1989. That repressive apparatus of the Romanian state at the time is reprehensible because its priority was the defense of the Communist Party and its leaders, it was not an intelligence service dedicated to the defense of citizens,” said SRI director Eduard Hellvig, according to a statement issued by the institution.
