Transnational workshop: Fighting disinformation that pushes citizens away from the EU

G4Media organized on October 3, 2024 the transnational workshop dedicated to the impact of anti-EU narratives in the Romanian online ecosystem, gathering all the important stakeholders and decision makers to debate and find common directions and solutions.

The think tank Romanian Center for European Policy has monitored for three years the impact, audiences, and trends with which anti-European messages circulate in the online ecosystem. In both 2024 and 2023, anti-European narratives captured popular themes of interest to the general public and consistently induced distrust in products and services, consumption, the free market, digital technology and services, public policy decisions, concrete measures to impending crises and challenges.
We are, like other Member States, facing an information war in which misinformation is gaining ground, trust in the media is waning and public communication is slow and ineffective. With low societal resilience, social network users in Romania are becoming victims of misinformation, losing trust and the ability to make decisions based on data and real facts.
A broader and more sustained collective effort is needed to combat this phenomenon.
The discussion reunited journalists and media professionals from 5 countries, decision makers from Romanian authorities, NGOs, business professionals: IT&C Industry, Telecom Industry, Business Organizations, large online technology networks, Media monitoring, Retail and Agriculture, Pharma Industry, Energy Industry, Online Commerce, Advertising, Think-tanks. It was focused on the challenges that different industries are facing in this information war and, following the debate, to work together to come up with a realistic set of short and long-term solutions.

Subjects for discussion:

  • The impact of anti-EU narratives in the Romanian online ecosystem. Trends and risks.
  • Logistics for quality information and fact-checking
  • Regulations for algorithms/social networks
  • Technology and accessible technology
  • Media literacy
